1 Corinthians 1:18-19 For the
message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to
us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written:
“
I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”
So many people have no concept of
the power of the cross. Just as 1 Corinthians 1:18 says. It is
foolishness to those who are perishing. Why is that? You would think
that because of what Jesus did on the cross any hold that Satan had on
mankind would have been completely destroyed and Satan would never
again be able to rain down his terror on mankind. He would never be
able to use others to destroy so many lives. The fact is however that
the cross is only an enabler. The cross can only break the chains of
bondage for those that choose to not only let that happen, but who
after having those chains of bondage broken, walk with the power that
God gives us to stay out of that bondage.
"Romans 6:1-23 What shall we say
then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not!
How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Or do you not know
that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized
into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into
death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the
Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have
been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also
shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our
old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away
with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died
has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we
shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from
the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. For the
death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He
lives, He lives to God. Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead
indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Therefore do
not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its
lusts. And do not present your members as instruments of
unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive
from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but
under grace. From
Slaves of Sin to Slaves of God. What then? Shall we sin because we are
not under law but under grace? Certainly not! Do you not know that to
whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves
whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading
to righteousness? But God be thanked that though you were slaves of
sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you
were delivered. And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of
righteousness. I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your
flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness,
and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your
members as slaves of righteousness for holiness. For when you were
slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. What fruit did
you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end
of those things is death. But now having been set free from sin, and
having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the
end, everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of
God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
This is where so many people
simply ignore or reject that enabling power that the cross has given
them. Because of what Adam and Eve did in the garden, dominion over
this world was given over to Satan. God could have, and did many times,
destroyed those who chose to walk in Satan's power rather than walk in
Gods. But that was not, and is not, His goal. He loves His creation so
much that He
knew that the only way to save them was to enable them to make the
choice for themselves to except or reject Him.
Let's look at the word
enable for a moment. Enable means to empower. Enabling someone means
that they are being given the means by which they can accomplish
whatever objective they have their minds set on.
That could be good or bad. I have
known many people on both sides of that isle. Those that have set out
to accomplish good have done so not only because God as enabled them to
do so. But because God enabled many around them to help them accomplish
their goal. These people that God brought into their lives, chose to
allow God to empower them to help others. And it is the power of God
that accomplished this. The bible tell us we can accomplish all things
through Christ.
Philippians 4:13 I can do all
things through Christ who strengthens me.
As I said. I
have known people on both sides of the
isle that are enablers. I can give you no clearer example than someone
that I have been dealing with for several years. This man was already a
very troubled young man when I met him. He was already on the road to
self destruction and always blamed everyone else for the troubles that
came into his life. It did not matter to him that he was the one making
the choices to hang out with those that chose to do the same things
that
he did. His so called friends where always in as much trouble with the
law as he was but he could not see that associating with these people
kept him in trouble. I had many discussions with him over this issue.
But to him, it was always someone else's fault that he was in trouble.
Many
times he blamed his parents and grandparents for his problems. I tried
many times to convince him that he needed to stop blaming others for
the things that where getting him into trouble and except
responsibility for his own actions. But he would have nothing to do
with that because that meant that he would have to make serious changes
in his life. That meant he would have to acknowledge that he was the
one with the problem. And now twelve years later he is still getting
into trouble,
and still blaming others for his actions. I have come to realize that
he was right. It is not all his fault that he is always getting into
trouble. And it was indeed those that he has surrounded himself with
that is partially to blame. Whither he ever admits it or not he is
still responsible for his actions. And there will be a day that comes
when that reality will hit him like a ton of bricks. But those that
have enabled him to continue in his life style of treating women like
his personal rug will also have that day. These people enabled him by
much the same way that others do. They, through their own selfishness,
continue to lie to themselves by covering for him and buying into his
lies. Enabling someone to continue in this lifestyle does not make
that person any less responsible for his or her actions. But it does
make those that enable that person, equal partners in their activities.
Proverbs 1 is very clear on that message.
America has become a nation that
wants to live lifestyles that are opposing to the word of God.
American's are quick to lay the responsibility for their actions on
others. They have surrounded themselves with like minded people and
huddle together to blame everyone else for their problems. This same
attitude was the reason that Hitler was able to come to power. It is
also the same reason that Socialism is taking hold in America. It is
always someone else's fault that someone cannot get themselves out of
their problems, their mistakes, their poverty. That is why so many
people turn to quick fixes that destroy other peoples lives. Liberals
want to redistribute everyone wealth, except their own, in an attempt
to correct the wrongs perpetrated on others. Sound familiar. It should.
That is the same argument that Hitler used. The problem is, Hitler did
not care about helping others to build a better life for themselves. He
was not interested in enabling others to become better people. He was
not interested in people becoming more godly, more caring, more
compassionate. He was not interested in morality. He was interested in
power. And the only thing he enabled people to do was destroy the lives
of millions of people. And Socialism was the tool he used to do so.
Hitler took to philosophies of
people like Margaret Sanger,
Thomas Malthus, and many other socialist, and molded them into his
own murderous policies. By using the theme that it was someone else's
fault that Germans where oppressed, he rallied
Germany behind him and thus began his rampage on Europe and the rest of
the world. This is the same theme that is now coming out of the Liberal
Party in America. Instead of enabling people to be better people, this
trend of blaming others for their problems has become an excuse to
destroy the lives of those that oppose their philosophies. This is what
Socialism does. It rejects the power of the cross but excepts all other
philosophies. Including those like Black
Liberation Theology. It destroys those who stand in the way of
seizing power
and placing itself on the throne. It has always done that and there has
never been a time in history when such philosophies have not attempted
to do so. Those that have stood behind such beliefs have been as
responsible for the atrocities that happened as those that committed
them. Although they will deny that, they are. And that is why they work
so hard to censor the bible. But as I have stated many times, Gods word
will stand. All the laws that man has passed and will continue to pass
in an attempt to nullify Gods word will fail. Everyone of us will stand
before His judgment seat. Those that have decided to take hold of the
enabling power that comes by way of the cross will be justified by only
one thing. The blood that Jesus shed on the cross.
Those that reject that enabling
power and choose to enable others to do so will find that the terror
that has come to the likes of those that have rejected Gods word will
last for an eternity. There are many enablers among us today who either
inspire us to do what is right and godly or to do what is wrong and
ungodly. The enabling power of the cross gives you no excuse to choose
the latter. But the grace of God gives you the right to choose to
except that enabling power that sets you free from the bondage of sin.
Let's take one more look at what to enable means.
Enable- To make able; To provide
with the means, opportunity, power or authority; To make possible or
effective.
Enabler- Someone who provides an
opportunity or to make it possible for someone to do something good or
bad.
Grace- The power and mercy given
to us by God to enable us to be, and to, live free from the bondage of
sin.
Notice here just what grace is
not. It is not an excuse to live a life of sin, fully expecting that
God, being the loving God that He is, will rescue you from your sins as
if He where a genie in a bottle. The power that God has given us
through the cross comes only because of what Jesus did on the cross. It
comes from no where and no one else. This power breaks the bondage that
sin has on those that except this free gift of Gods mercy. I have told
many that those that freely except this gift are no longer under the
covenant but those that reject that free gift and choose to live life
their way, are still living under the covenant of the Old Testament.
This does not go over very well with those who reject Christ nor does
it go over very well with those that think that their works are good
enough to get them into heaven.
Sometimes hope comes with
discipline. For without that discipline there is no hope for those that
choose to ignore Gods plan for their salvation.
